COURSE DESCRIPTION

Diabetic foot is an important, yet much neglected complication of diabetes mellitus. It is common for people with diabetic foot problems to remain undiagnosed and untreated, especially in developing countries.

Yet, with proper training of doctors in the prevention and management of diabetic foot disorders, significant change can be brought about in this scenario.

Considering this, experts at the Chellaram Diabetes Institute have developed a unique online Certificate Course in Diabetic Foot Management (CCDFM), which aims to build the capacity of doctors, particularly primary care physicians, in the prevention and management of diabetic foot disease.

The online platform allows for the doctor to learn at his/her own pace, and via, desktop, laptop, tablet or mobile.

The course consists of six modules, which include lecture videos, case studies and activities, which can be completed in six to eight hours, and in multiple sessions.

The six modules are as follows:

This module covers the diagnosis and classification of diabetes, the pharmacotherapy of diabetes incorporating the latest guidelines, and discusses the pathophysiology of diabetic vascular complications.

This module talks about the burden of diabetic foot disease, and covers in brief the clinical aspects related to the anatomy and physiology of the lower limb, and how normal and abnormal biomechanics can impact foot structure and function in diabetes.

This module discusses neuropathy – its burden and classification, the risk factors for peripheral neuropathy, the clinical presentation and evaluation of peripheral neuropathy in diabetes through demonstrative videos, and explains the prevention and management of diabetic neuropathy.

This module talks about the burden of peripheral arterial disease (PAD), the classification and staging of PAD, the various risk factors for PAD, the clinical features and diagnostic testing of PAD through a demonstrative video, and discusses the different modalities of managing PAD.

This module explains how diabetes leads to various types of foot infections, the clinical evaluation and investigation of diabetes related foot infections, and the management of diabetic foot infections, highlighting the rational use of antibiotic therapy.

This module elucidates the various ways and means for prevention of diabetic foot, the basic principles of offloading and footwear, Charcot neuro-osteoarthropathy, wound care management, and includes a special section on imaging in diabetic foot.

Each module begins with a pre-test consisting of MCQs, and concludes with a post-test to assess the learning progress of the course participant.

At the end of the course, there is an exit exam, which the participant has to clear in order to obtain the course completion certificate.

The course is endorsed by the Leicester Diabetes Centre, UK.
